Massachusetts Immunization Information System (MIIS)

In June 2010, legislation was passed charging the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) to establish a statewide lifespan immunization registry. One year later, in February 2011, MDPH launched the Massachusetts Immunization Information System (MIIS). The MIIS is a secure and confidential web-based system capable of accepting immunization information through electronic data exchange with electronic health records systems (EHR) or by direct data entry into the online user interface.

The primary benefits of the MIIS are access to shared, consolidated patient immunization records, customized provider and patient reports, improved clinical decision-making through the use of advanced immunization forecasting functionality, practice and vaccine management tools, and overall enhanced infrastructure for efficient disease control and surveillance.

Vaccine Management in the MIIS

In June 2013, MDPH launched the Vaccine Management Module of the MIIS. This module provides functionality to allow provider sites to order state-supplied vaccine online, view and update shipping information, and track vaccine inventory for both state-supplied and privately purchased vaccines.

Interested in Meaningful Use?

Data exchange with the MIIS meets the public health objective for attesting to Meaningful Use Stage 1 and 2, the EHR financial incentive program sponsored by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid. If you are a provider who uses an EHR system and you are interested in data exchange with the MIIS for the purpose of participating in Meaningful Use, the first step is to have your internal Information Technology (IT) staff or your EHR Tecnical Support staff review the HL7 Transfer Specifications. This is a detailed technical document that describes the format of the HL7 test message that will be sent to the registry. To learn more please visit the Meaningful Use tab of the ContactMIIS Resource Center.
